The second largest city in the state of Massachusetts, Worchester lies 45 miles east of Boston. Originally named Quinsigamond Plantation in the 1670s by the first Europeans settlers, Worchester, along with much of the state of Massachusetts, is the birthplace of the American Revolution.
It was home to Isaiah Thomas, the pamphleteer whose words helped unite the colonies to stand up for their rights against the oppressive British rule. Support from Worchester was paramount during Shay’s Rebellion (1786 – 1787) that led to the formation of the Constitution of the United States.
Considered a modern city during the 1800’s, the citizens of Worchester fought for the abolition of the slave trade and held the first women’s rights convention in the US.
One hundred and fifty years later, Worchester is still considered a modern city with innovations such as wireless internet access (Wi-Fi) on commuter trains, libraries and throughout the downtown core.
Today the city is home to some of the top medical and biotechnologies research in the country. Worchester boasts nine post secondary universities and colleges, which, in a population of only 177,000, makes it a densely academic city.
